Description

Learn first aid basics to keep your family safe, and know when to treat at home or when to seek medical help. Over 3 x 2-hour sessions, this free course will provide you with sound knowledge to treat bleeds, burns, and CPR basics, as well as maintaining your complementary first aid box. This course is for adults only. There is no creche provision.

What will I learn?
This practical workshop will introduce you to essential first aid skills that could help you respond confidently and safely in an emergency involving a child or family member. You will learn how to assess an emergency situation, check whether a casualty is responsive, recognise the difference between an unconscious person who is breathing and one who is not, and take appropriate action while emergency help is being sought.
You will be shown how to place an unconscious breathing casualty into the recovery position, perform CPR using specialist training equipment, and respond to choking emergencies. The workshop will also help you recognise signs of severe breathing difficulties and understand how to provide appropriate first aid support. By the end of the session, you will have developed practical skills and increased confidence in dealing with common first aid emergencies.

What will I need to take part?
This is a friendly, supportive and highly practical workshop designed to help you learn through demonstration, discussion and hands-on practice. Your tutor will explain and demonstrate key first aid techniques before giving you opportunities to practise using specialist training equipment.
You will take part in activities and scenarios that encourage you to think about how you would respond in real-life situations. There is no formal assessment or exam, and no previous first aid knowledge is required. Questions and discussion are encouraged throughout, allowing you to learn at your own pace in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Some practical activities may involve kneeling or working at floor level. If you have any accessibility requirements, please contact us before the session so that we can discuss any adjustments that may help you participate comfortably.

What to expect
No previous first aid experience or qualifications are needed to attend this workshop. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and suitable footwear that allows you to move safely during practical activities. You are welcome to bring a drink with you if you wish.
All specialist first aid training equipment will be provided. If you have any accessibility requirements or would benefit from additional support, please let us know before the workshop so that we can help you take part fully.

Where can it lead to?
This workshop provides a useful introduction to first aid and can help you feel more confident about responding to emergencies involving children, family members and others in your community. The knowledge and practical skills you develop can help create a safer environment at home and support you in your role as a parent, carer, grandparent or volunteer.
Many learners choose to progress to our Family First Aid 4-Week Course, where they can build on the skills introduced in this workshop, explore a wider range of first aid situations, and gain additional practical experience through extended practice and discussion.
The workshop can also act as a stepping stone to other health, wellbeing and community learning courses. If you are interested in gaining a recognised first aid qualification for work, volunteering or further study, your tutor will be able to advise you about appropriate next steps and progression opportunities.
Please note that this workshop is designed to develop first aid knowledge, practical skills and confidence. It does not lead to a regulated first aid qualification unless specifically stated.
