Description

Important: This workshop is free, but participants must book their place with Northamptonshire Adult Learning and purchase a separate garden admission ticket to take part. Tickets can be purchased via the Boughton House website: Purchase a Garden Ticket. Alternatively you can purchase your ticket at the House shop on arrival.

Discover the beauty of Boughton House's stunning gardens through the lens of your smartphone. Delivered in partnership with Boughton House as part of the National Garden Scheme (NGS) October Gardens event, this free 2-hour workshop will help you develop practical smartphone photography skills while exploring the spectacular autumn displays of the historic gardens.

Starting in the Hawk Yard, you'll learn simple techniques to improve your photographs, including composition, lighting, focus and creative camera features. You will then put your new skills into practice on a guided photography walk through the gardens, capturing seasonal colours, landscapes and natural details.

Whether you're completely new to photography or looking to get more from your smartphone camera, this workshop offers a relaxed and supportive opportunity to learn, be creative and enjoy one of Northamptonshire's most beautiful historic settings.

What will I learn?
Discover how to take stunning photos using just your smartphone while reconnecting with the world around you. This workshop encourages being active and creative, exploring the nature-space, whilst learning photography on your smartphone. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to exercise control over their smartphone camera in an outdoor/daylight setting along with applying foundational principles of composition and aesthetics to their photography. Learners will also be able to edit their images using in-camera controls and create a thematic picture set.

The workshop is set at an introductory level and invites participants to enjoy the benefits of being active and creative in an outdoor setting, document and explore the nature-space using the smartphone camera, edit individual pictures and compile a thematic view-set of their images.

What will I need to take part?
Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes for light walking, bring your smartphone (any model welcome ensuring it has a working camera), phone charger, notebook is optional but may be useful, and a curiosity and willingness to explore.

What to expect
Your tutor will start by guiding you through how to set the camera controls, subject choice, composition, aesthetic considerations and using apps, followed by a photographic exploration of the location concluding with an introduction to on-screen picture editing and tips for creating a picture-set. Tutors use Google Classroom to help make course resources available both during and between sessions. Please take advantage of joining your Classroom when invited to do so. Where can it lead to?
This workshop provides a foundation for developing your Smartphone Photography skills and can lead to further learning in photography, digital imaging and creative arts. You may choose to progress to another of our Smartphone Photography Workshops, more advanced photography courses, or try a longer course such as our Introduction to Smartphone Photography or Introduction to Smartphone Video. The techniques you learn can be used to capture everyday moments, landscapes, architecture, travel and family events, helping you gain confidence in using your smartphone camera creatively.
