What will I learn?
Across five weeks, you will gain foundational skills in smartphone photography, building confidence in using your device creatively and technically. By the end of the course you will be able to describe the capabilities of your smartphone’s app-based imaging system and explore taking photographs in a natural outdoor setting, use your screen as a compositional tool, learning key theories of composition while exploring lines, shapes and patterns in the urban environment, identify different forms of light and learn how to use them creatively both indoors and outdoors, gain insight into subject choice by exploring forms of photographic practice such as fine art, documentary and publicity, plan your own personal shoot for the weekend based on your interests, edit your images into coherent sets, and apply basic technical adjustments to individual digital images using smartphone editing tools or free apps. Throughout the course you will develop a personal photographic style, learn to work intentionally with subject and light, and build a small portfolio of images.

What will I need to take part?
A smartphone with a built-in camera (Apple or Android). Sufficient storage space for taking photographs and saving edited images. A fully charged battery for every session. Weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor sessions (raincoat, comfortable shoes, warm layers as needed). Optional: earphones, tripod, phone clamp, or lenses (not essential).
