Description

Over five weekly sessions, learners will gain the technical knowledge and creative skills to transform everyday point-and-click photos into high quality images using their smartphone camera app. Throughout the course, learners will identify and explore the 10 modes of shooting available in the Smartphone Camera App, expand visual literacy with the application of fundamental compositional techniques, develop observational skills in assessing the differing qualities of available light, explore practical methods of approach for photographing people and places, and digitally edit images using in-app controls to build a themed portfolio/picture-set.

Series Schedule:
Week 1: Introducing the Smartphone Camera App: 10 Modes of filming
Week 2: Composition Using the Frame ( nature shoot )
Week 3: Assessing the Quality of Available Light ( urban shoot )
Week 4: Social Photography: People and Places ( indoor / outdoor )
Week 5: Image Editing (1): in-App Digital Editing and Creating Picture Sets

Resources:
The Powerpoint deck for each session will be made available via Google Class and an A4 handout detailing the key points will be distributed in-class. Individual Learning Plans will be offered in digital and electronic form, with a weekly update at the end of each session.  

What will I learn?

What will I need to take part?
Learners will need to bring their Smartphone device with built in camera Apple or Android), enough storage space to take and save photographs, a fully charged battery for every session, clothing suitable for outdoor sessions (weather dependant). No previous photography experience is needed.

What to expect
A friendly, practical course with both indoor and outdoor photographic activities, tutor demonstrations followed by hands-on practice and creative tasks, guided exploration of nature and urban environments (with indoor alternatives if weather conditions are poor), group discussion and feedback to support your development

Where can it lead to?
After completing the course you may progress to Smartphone Photography Level 2, creative editing workshops, social media content creation, community arts or visual storytelling classes, starting a personal portfolio. These skills can support personal creativity, small business promotion, visual communication and further study in photography

Course eligibility and fees
This course is for residents of Northamptonshire aged 19+. Fees are payable on enrolment as published on the booking page. If you are in receipt of certain benefits or in employment and earning a low salary, you could be eligible for reduced fees.
