Description

The course is designed for absolute beginners. With no sewing experience necessary. This course will teach you the step by step basics for using a pattern, preparing your sewing for machining stitching and using the sewing machine.

Course aim
In a tutor led environment learners will be able to begin or re-visit their dressmaking journey. This course encourages learners to become familiar with using a commercial pattern, copying and tracing from multi-patterns. Focus is on building learners' techniques to enable construction of a simple garment. In part one sewing projects include a 'Japanese style wrap apron' and pull-on pants or 'PJ' bottoms. These projects will enable the learner to experience a range of techniques from choosing the right size to make, fabric choice, cutting out and basic finish. In addition to using a sewing machine learners will explore some hand sewing techniques to enable a good finish. We will be using patterns from Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style: Key Pieces to Sew + Accessories, Styling, and Inspiration.

Course outcomes
a) Use a commercial pattern to construct a garment (pattern tracing/copying) b) Cut out a garment using a napped fabric (e.g. one way design/needlecord) c) Construct samples (flat and French seams, casing) d) Recognise the haberdashery required to complete a garment (zip options) e) Use the correct finishing processes to complete a garment (hem variations as demonstrated)
